Hello Folks,
Of all of the African cultures, the groups of Nigeria and surrounding nations have always intrigued me the most. I especially admire the kingdoms of the Yoruba and the Niger Delta trade cities (Brass ect.). I noticed a seeming lack of these and also the forest kingdoms of the Congo anywhere (the Amazons are pulled from Dahomey, a bush country kingdom). Or am I missing something? If not, how would y'all suggest I put then in Nyambe.

While Mabwe was partially based on Great Zimbabwe at least for the capital city I have used Yoruba/Nigeria as the inspiration for this empire. Great Zimbabwe was not the only city with a wall. Several Yoruban cities had huge walls, one was 18 miles long!
I recently picked up a terrific book called The Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria by William Bascom. It has photos and the chapters cover history, social order, spiritual cycle, deities, economics, government and esthetics. This book will give you plenty of ideas. I just did a search on it and you can find it on Amazon.com.

Hello Folks,
Thanks for the info. After you pointed this little factiod on Mabwe out, I did notice the illistrations for that kingdom looked Nigerian to a good degree. Thanks also for the book info, I will look to aquiring it as soon as finances admit. I will be running the next campaign and will be basing it in the forest of the center. Would this region and it's inhabitants have a Congo Basin feel, and if so, what the cultures of the central forest would look like?

The book I mentioned earlier will be a great asset in helping you with this area. As for cultures, look to the wakyambi and ngoi first, with less tembu as you get deeper in the forest. It is also a great place for "lost civilizations". You may want to check out the imbulu www.nyambe.com/goodies/imbulu.pdf for inspiration. They can easily be dropped into your campaign. Thanks again for the posts. It is great to see what others are doing with Nyambe.
