The Tales of SombUnto
Chapter 2
It took three days to get back to the kraal, but they were peaceful and uninterrupted. After a full days rest, we traveled to Msiba’s house with the odd coconut bat creatures to see if she knew about them. As soon as we showed them to her, she immediately told us to destroy them. After we did so, Msiba told us about them.
They are the seeds of the malata plant, and serve the purpose of scouting out where people live. It then plants itself in the nearest source of water and grows into a people-eating tree. Once it has eaten enough people, it produces malata warriors and grows a boma ... this is when it is most dangerous. Msiba also told us that the malata plant was created by kosa mchawi.
It was then that I realized that what we saw 12 days ago while herding was not a boman, but a malata plant seed!
At dawn, we headed back to the village only to find out that a warrior had gone missing by the water. Msiba tells everyone in the village that we must leave this kraal immediately and move to the next. It must be the malata plant! Nuboli the hunter and some scouts from the village then leave to go see if they can destroy the malata plant. A carved post was then set up in the middle of the village to show that this kraal is cursed.
The whole village then traveled to the next kraal, but it also had a warning post. It was infested with ingogo, who had dug tunnels underneath the boma. we had little choice but to keep moving. That evening, Nuboli shows up alone and greets us with ill tidings. He told us that the malata plant was more dangerous than he could have imagined. It had killed all of his fellow hunters, had warriors, and a boma wall that had vines that attacked them.
There was no time to grieve for the fallen, for we left the next day and traveled for many more weeks until we reached the next kraal. However, the new kraal was also wanted by the Moro clan, who were driven from their previous kraal by the entare, just as we were by the malata plant.
There was only one way to decide which clan would get to stay in the kraal, ritual combat. The six of us and six other warriors in our clan were give blunted spears, as we were to throw them at twelve members of the Moro clan until one side was completely unconscious. Eventually, our clan won and by right, our clan got to stay in the kraal.
After a few seasons of staying in the new kraal, a soroka told Yakubu, Komasa, Runako, Ole tUbi, Hualib, and I, SombUnto said that we would be leaving soon for spiritual reasons. Change is coming.
A few days later, we heard that some hyenas had been stalking our clans cattle, so we went to take care of them. After killing the hyenas, we saw an oryx. Could it have been the same oryx that we saw before? There is no doubt in my mind. We followed it to a grouping of rocks with markings on them arranged in a circle. Yakubu stepped into the circle and disappeared.
Yet again, the oryx has lead us to something mysterious.
